You can get a lot of racing action in a relatively small space with HO Scale slot car sets, the primary layout needs only 4 by 11 feet to be fully set up.

AFX Super International Details

To race on this set you get 4 Formula 1 style Mega G slot cars. These have a great finish and look great and are designed to take the bumps and crashes of full on slot car racing. The cars are HO scale size which is 1/64 of actual size or about 2.5 inches long. These cars are fast and they really do whip around the track. The cars include magnets to help keep the cars on the track when traveling round the bends and keeping the speed up.
The most frustrating thing when getting started in slot car racing is getting used to keeping the cars on the track when negotiating the turns. AFX have introduced the Tri-Power pack for this reason where the levels can be set from beginner to intermediate to expert. The beginner level enables the cars, depending on the track layout, to stay on the track between 90 -100% of the time at top speed according to the manufacturers web site. With the intermediate level setting you can stay on the track 60-70% of time at full throttle, and expert level is entirely up to you. This appears to be a great innovation to ease beginners into the hobby of slot car racing. The recommended age for this set is 8 years and up.
